“…”Cells cleverly separate the most active genes into their own special neighborhood, to make it easier for proteins and other regulators to reach them,”…at a finer scale, the genome adopts an unusual organization known in mathematics as a “fractal.” The specific architecture the scientists found, called a “fractal globule,” enables the cell to pack DNA incredibly tightly …”Nature’s devised a stunningly elegant solution to storing information — a super-dense, knot-free structure,”…” Full Slice

—–A Power Station in Your Basement

The centerpiece of the new mini power plant system is a natural gas powered engine used in some Volkswagen Golf models. Thanks to the engine’s highly intelligent design—and the fact that the heat it produces can be directly used to heat the house—the efficiency factor of the Volkswagen mini thermal power plant lies at around 94 percent.

Open Letter to Children’s Hospital and the City of Federal Way

Saturday, September 12th, 2009 by Wadical Weft

At least a start:

I recommend that Children’s Hospital relocate from their Laurelwood facility to a brand new facility in Federal Way.  Specifically, relocate next to the Federal Way Transit Center where the old AMC theater was prior to being torn down.  That property is owned by the city and was originally intended to house Highline Community College.  That project is on indefinite hold.

The City of Federal Way (FDub) owns the the property.  It is zoned for 18 story buildings.  The ground is level and clear and impacts no riparian areas.  The property has views of the Cascades, Mt. Rainier, Puget Sound, and the Olympics (at 5 stories plus, Rainier from everywhere.).  Two transit centers, I-5, and open area for helicopter landings are close by.  Light rail is coming.  There are several closeby areas that would server as a helicopter landing pad when bringing in emergency pediatric cases.

I recommend:

  • The City of Federal Way advocate for the relocation of Children’s Hospital to downtown FDub
  • The City give the property known as Center Plaza to Children’s Hospital in exchange for relocating for 10 years.
  • The City.rezone Center Plaza to allow any configuration Children’s Hospital desires, including maximum building height.
  • The City work with Children’s to acquire other nearby property as necessary.

Silk-based biopolymers and biophotonics

Monday, August 31st, 2009 by SecureCare

“In many biomedical applications, waveguides must interface directly with living cells and tissues, requiring the waveguide constituent to be biocompatible. Biodegradability is also desirable,”… “The use of a biocompatible, biodegradable polymer like silk to guide light opens up new opportunities in biologically based modulation and sensing along with an opportunity to integrate light delivery within living tissue.”…” Full Slice

The Salmon Of Pout

Monday, July 6th, 2009 by Walter

In the ultimate game two players are offered a sum of money; player A determines the split, an offer player B can accept or reject. If the offer is rejected neither player gets any money. Many trial runs show that players tend to reject perceived unfair offers, even though nearly any offer puts free money in their pocket at no personal expense.
A team at University of Pavia, Italy ran the game and tested the player’s blood for certain fatty acids and found that “the ratio of serum omega-3/omega-6 fatty acids was significantly lower in patients who rejected unfair offers as compared to those who did not. The results of this study suggest that a depletion of the serum omega-3 fatty acids is associated with rejections of unfair ultimatum offers in an experimental neuroeconomic setting.”

Long life chow

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 by SecureCare

“Some food groups in the Mediterranean diet are more important than others in promoting health and longer life according to new research…Eating more vegetables, fruits, nuts, pulses and olive oil, and drinking moderate amounts of alcohol, while not consuming a lot of meat or excessive amounts of alcohol is linked to people living longer.

However, the study also claims, that following a Mediterranean diet high in fish, seafood and cereals and low in dairy products were not indicators of longevity….” Full Slice

I am of the dirt and dust

Thursday, June 18th, 2009 by SecureCare

“…I remind all officials and security and military personnel that they should preserve their religion and not sell it out for the sake of others, and be aware that the excuse that they have been ordered [to act unlawfully] will never be accepted by the great God. They should consider people’s protesting children like their own, and avoid any irresponsible and inhumane confrontation [with them], and by learning from the past be aware that sooner or later those who commit unjust acts against people will be punished both in this world and the next. It is not possible in this era to hide the truth from the people by censorship and cutting off telecommunication communications between them.” - Full Slice written by Hossein Ali Montazeri
