More helical organization shows up

Thursday, August 9th, 2007 by SecureCare

“… an international team has discovered that under the right conditions, particles of inorganic dust can become organised into helical structures. These structures can then interact with each other in ways that are usually associated with organic compounds…particles in a plasma can undergo self-organization as electronic charges become separated and the plasma becomes polarized. This effect results in microscopic strands of solid particles that twist into corkscrew shapes, or helical structures. These helical strands are themselves electronically charged and are attracted to each other…not only do these helical strands interact in a counterintuitive way in which like can attract like, but they also undergo changes that are normally associated with biological molecules, such as DNA and proteins…” Full Slice

Prepare to move out signal

“Metastasis – when cancer cells dissociate from the original tumor and migrate via the blood stream to colonize distant organs – is the main cause of cancer death. A team of scientists…has now revealed new details about the mechanisms controlling metastasis of breast cancer cells…’The mechanism we identified is clinically important. It can predict the development of metastasis and possibly how the cancer will respond to treatment.’ This discovery may, in the future, aid in the development of drugs to prevent or reduce the production of the unwanted protein, and thus prevent metastasis in breast or other cancers.” Full Slice

“While 10 years of bathing North Carolina pine tree stands with extra carbon dioxide did allow the trees to grow more tissue, only those pines receiving the most water and nutrients were able to store significant amounts of carbon that could offset the effects of global warming…” Full Slice

Preparing for the coming rains

Monday, August 6th, 2007 by SecureCare

“A new study reveals correlations between plentiful sunspots and periods of heavy rain in East Africa. Intense rainfall in the region often leads to flooding and disease outbreaks.

The analysis by a team of…researchers shows that unusually heavy rainfalls in East Africa over the past century preceded peak sunspot activity by about one year. Because periods of peak sunspot activity, known as solar maxima, are predictable, so too are the associated heavy rains that precede them, the researchers propose…“We expect East Africa to experience a major intensification of rainy season precipitation, along with widespread Rift Valley Fever epidemics, a year or so before the solar maximum of 2011-2012,”…” Full Slice

Is it really that “simple” ?

“By short-circuiting the sensory organ that detects the chemical cues mice use to attract mates, a team of…researchers has prompted female mice to behave like male mice in the throes of courtship.

The finding…suggests that the neural circuits that govern gender-specific behaviors, such as aggression and courtship, are similar in the male and female brain. According to the new study, the sexual behaviors of female mice, at least, are ruled by a pheromone-detecting organ that engages a neural circuit that determines whether a mouse shows its feminine side or acts like a male…”The female behaves exactly like the male…In the big picture, it suggests that the female brain has a perfectly functional male behavioral circuit.”…” Full Slice - This is not going to be popular with certain segments of the population

The matrix of autism

Saturday, August 4th, 2007 by SecureCare

“…The scientists ran the same experiment with autistic and normal adults, with the same result. As they report…these findings speak not only to the level of autistic intelligence but to the nature of autistic intelligence…” Full Slice

Animated beer

Friday, August 3rd, 2007 by SecureCare

“CSIRO fluids researcher…says the physics of bubble creation in carbonated drinks like beer is complex. “As you pour beer into a glass, you see bubbles appearing on what are called nucleation sites, where the glass isn’t quite smooth…“The bubbles expand to a certain size then rise up in streams to the surface, where they bump into each other and form a raft of foam that floats on the top.”…” Full Slice

Alternating electric fields disrupt cell division

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007 by SecureCare

“Low-intensity electric fields can disrupt the division of cancer cells and slow the growth of brain tumors, suggest laboratory experiments and a small human trial, raising hopes that electric fields will become a new weapon for stalling the progression of cancer…In the studies, the research team uses alternating electric fields that jiggle electrically charged particles in cells back and forth hundreds of thousands of times per second…” Full Slice

Agreed that more research IS required

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007 by SecureCare

“…“There is strong evidence concerning many ways in which the mechanism of this ‘memory’ may come about. There are also mechanisms by which such solutions may possess effects on biological systems which substantially differ from plain water.”…“These discoveries may have far reaching implications and more research is required,” Full Slice

And maybe not key

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007 by SecureCare

“…The findings indicate that the mechanism of the increase in tumor development through loss of GCC expression was a combination, in both models, of a loss of genomic integrity and an increase in cell growth. “When you eliminate GCC from cells, they develop a level of genomic instability, where they start accumulating more mutations and lose pieces of genetic material…Putting those pieces together – exposure to carcinogen or spontaneous mutations in APC – which happens to almost every colorectal cancer patient, and the loss of GCC signaling brought on by a loss of the two hormones in one of the earliest events that occurs in tumor development in the intestine…and it’s a recipe for colon cancer.”…” Full Slice “There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph.
