A major uncertainty

Friday, July 31st, 2009 by SecureCare

And broken modeling behavior.

“Low-level stratiform clouds—which play an important climatic role because of their net cooling effect on the global climate—appear to dissipate as the ocean warms, thereby enhancing the warming (i.e., a positive feedback)…the researchers found that of 18 leading global climate models from modeling centers around the world, only two reproduced the observed cloud behavior.….” Full Slice

Healing hearts

Monday, July 20th, 2009 by SecureCare

“…investigators have demonstrated that induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells can be used to treat heart disease. iPS cells are stem cells converted from adult cells. In this study, the researchers reprogrammed ordinary fibroblasts, cells that contribute to scars such as those resulting from a heart attack, converting them into stem cells that fix heart damage caused by infarction…”Bioengineered fibroblasts acquired the capacity to repair and regenerate infarcted hearts.”…” Full Slice

Nee-ner nee-ner nee-ner, the nerds did put humans on the moon.

Friday, July 17th, 2009 by Wadical Weft

Yup, can’t deny it now.  Any organization can send a satellite to take pictures of the moon which will prove we were there.

Congratulations NASA!  Regardless of why you did it, you did it and everyone survived the trips.

Accidental discovery

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 by SecureCare

“The accidental discovery of a bowl-shaped molecule that pulls carbon dioxide out of the air suggests new possibilities for dealing with global warming, including genetically engineering microbes to manufacture those CO2 “catchers,” …” Full Slice

The Salmon Of Pout

Monday, July 6th, 2009 by Walter

In the ultimate game two players are offered a sum of money; player A determines the split, an offer player B can accept or reject. If the offer is rejected neither player gets any money. Many trial runs show that players tend to reject perceived unfair offers, even though nearly any offer puts free money in their pocket at no personal expense.
A team at University of Pavia, Italy ran the game and tested the player’s blood for certain fatty acids and found that “the ratio of serum omega-3/omega-6 fatty acids was significantly lower in patients who rejected unfair offers as compared to those who did not. The results of this study suggest that a depletion of the serum omega-3 fatty acids is associated with rejections of unfair ultimatum offers in an experimental neuroeconomic setting.”

Cascadian Carbon Bank, a regional asset

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 by SecureCare

Consider how this approach might leverage local resources and advance smart regional development. Using real values of course.

“The forests of the Pacific Northwest hold significant potential to increase carbon storage and help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in coming years, a recent study concludes, if they are managed primarily for that purpose through timber harvest reductions and increased rotation ages.

In the complete absence of stand-replacing disturbances – via fire or timber harvest – forests of Oregon and Northern California could theoretically almost double their carbon storage.

Although it isn’t realistic to expect an absence of disturbance, the estimates were based on average conditions up until now that include variation in forest biomass, age, climate, disturbances and soil fertility….” Full Slice
